Dr.
Rice, it's wonderful to see you here and I've been very impressed with your
mastery of issues ... everybody is rightly extraordinarily impressed with
your credentials and your experience in this field.'' Which
Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee began his questions to
Condoleezza Rice in this way? Oops. My
bad. It was a Democrat, the Great
Black Hope, Barack Obama. Now
maybe I’m being unfair. He did make a
razor sharp point. He urged Rice to
“display some independence” and question the White House line from time to
time like her wise predecessor Colin Powell.
Wow! That’s really laying it on
the line. You
would never know that he was “grilling” or should we say playing Patti cake
with an incompetent National Security
advisor who missed all the clues that al-Qaeda was going to make a major
strike in the US. You’d never know he
was questioning an official who falsely scared the country to death about
Saddam’s nuclear bombs with her “We don’t want the smoking gun to be a
mushroom cloud.” comment. When
the vote came only Barbara Boxer and Kerry voted against Rice’s
confirmation. The Democrats have
learned absolutely nothing from their election defeat. Watch Bush’s next State of the Union
address. Count how many times the
Democrats rise and give him a standing ovation. It’s enough to give Terminal Stupidity a
bad name. My
prediction. Obama will be the Black
Joe Lieberman. Back in September he
told the
Chicago
Tribune editorial board that the US might have to launch
“surgical” missile strikes against Iran and Pakistan to keep extremists from
getting hold of nuclear bombs. It
looks more and more likely that the surgery will take place this year. We can expect Obama to lead the cheering
from the loyal opposition. Unions Squander Money Big
Time Read
in the Dec. 27 Nation magazine that US labor unions spent more than $150
million dollars on the election [SEIU $65 million, AFSCME $50 million and the
AFL-CIO $45 million] All of it down
the Democratic Party rat-hole. Kerry said squat about union issues. Can you imagine what could have been done
if just half that money was spent on innovative media efforts to open up
working people’s eyes to the class war being fought against them? And
how many millions of the money was spent trying to keep Ralph Nader off the
ballot, tying him up in court and blackening his name? I’ve
been in a union for 35 years and I sick and tired of this brainlessness. It’s time for labor to pull out of the
Democratic Party, totally. No support
for any Democrat on any level. Instead
of keeping the Democratic Party on life support the unions should join up
with the anti-war movement. The
hundreds of thousands of people who turn out for peace rallies could be
organized to support union issues if they were only asked. For a site about unionists who are working
on this issue see
Us Labor Against the War.
